Risk Factors For Heart Attack

Heart attacks strike both men and women. However, some people are more likely than others to have a heart attack because of their "risk factors."

Risk factors are behaviors or conditions that increase our chances of a heart attack.

Some of the risk factors for heart attack are beyond our control.

Other factors, however, can be managed to help us lower our risk of having a first–or repeat–heart attack.

Factors that increase our risk of a heart attack, that we cannot control, are:

1) Pre-existing coronary heart diseases, including a previous heart attack, a prior angioplasty or bypass surgery, or angina

2) Age: In men, the risk increases after age 45; in women, the risk increases after age 55.

3) Family history of early heart disease-a father or brother diagnosed before age 55; or a mother or sister diagnosed before age 65.

Risk factors for heart attack that we can control include:

1) Smoking.

Smoking is the "leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States," according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.

If you have heart disease and continue to smoke, your risk of having a heart attack is extremely high.

There is simply no safe way to smoke.

Do not be fooled by low tar or low nicotine cigarettes. They do not reduce the risk of heart attack.

The good news is that quitting smoking will immediately and significantly reduce your risk of further heart disease complications.

2) High blood pressure.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is another major risk factor for heart disease and heart attack.

For those who already have heart disease, high blood pressure raises heart attack risk even higher.

If you have heart disease and are overweight or obese, your risks of heart attack and other heart complications rise sharply.

Being overweight also increases your chances of developing other major risk factors for heart disease and heart attack, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Thirty minutes of moderate exercise, five times a week, is one of the best medicines you can give yourself. It helps to protect heart health.

A brisk walk, gardening, dancing, washing the car, or cleaning the house, are all great ways to stay active and healthy.

6) Diabetes.

If you have diabetes, you have about the same high risk for heart attack as someone who has heart disease itself.

Those who have both heart disease and diabetes have an even higher risk for heart attack than those who have either diabetes or heart disease alone.

Up to three quarters of those who have diabetes die of some type of heart or blood vessel disease.

However, if you have diabetes, there is much you can do to prevent the complications of this condition. Consult your physician or health care professional for advice.

Certain risk factors for heart attack tend to occur together. When they do, you are twice as likely to develop heart disease.
